Bösendorfer Cocteau Collector's Edition

By Lucy Maddox - September 07, 2021

The Cocteau Collector’s Edition Grand Piano was born out of a collaboration between legendary piano makers, Bösendorfer and the prestigious Menton Music Festival.

Menton, a stunning medieval town in the French Riviera, is home to the Jean Cocteau museum and destination for a magical music festival that takes place outdoors each summer, opposite the port on the forecourt of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel.

The characterful grand piano was therefore created to celebrate both the festival, which will mark its 72nd edition this year, and the great French artist, Jean Cocteau.

JEAN COCTEAU: A MULTI-DISCIPLINED ARTIST

A contemporary of Picasso and colleague of highly regarded artists and musicians such as Igor Stravinsky and Erik Satie, Jean Cocteau was a prolific writer, designer, playwright, artist and filmmaker.

Some of his best-known works include novel Les Enfants Terribles (1929) and his critically acclaimed films le Sang d’un poète (Blood of a Poet) (1930), La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast) (1946), and Orphée (Orpheus) (1949).

Cocteau was a self-taught artist, inspired in part by his interest in Cubism and he was once quoted as saying:

“Poets don’t draw, they unravel their handwriting and then tie it up again, but differently.”

This explains the distinctive and fluid style of his 'Portrait of  Orpheus', depicted on the inside of the grand piano lid.
