Bösendorfer Woman in Gold: Celebration of Vienna

By Lucy Maddox - February 11, 2021

Being Austria's sole remaining piano makers, Bösendorfer are always keen to celebrate their city's history. Bösendorfer Woman in Gold is part of their Artist Series, seamlessly combining music and art and shining a light on Vienna’s rich heritage. Coach House Pianos are proud to offer a stunning range of Bösendorfer pianos.

GUSTAV KLIMT: WOMAN IN GOLD

The Bösendorfer 214VC ‘Woman in Gold’ is a beautiful tribute to one of the founding artists of the Vienna Secession Movement  during the Art Nouveau era;  a renowned Austrian symbolist painter, Gustav Klimt.

Perhaps Klimt’s most famous works include ‘The Kiss’ and ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (Woman in Gold)’, both of which contain his signature gold leaf, and both of which have featured on Bösendorfer grand pianos.

  GOLDEN EXPRESSION

Klimt’s father was a gold engraver and as a movement, the Vienna Secession were deliberate in their use of gold motifs to symbolise  growth (gold being a symbol of light).

Gold was therefore a big part of Klimt’s life and the ‘Golden Phase’ of his career, thought to be inspired by his travels in Italy, gained him critical success and financial prosperity.

Transferring this stunning golden work of art onto a Bösendorfer 214VC Grand Piano involved the use of sophisticated reprographic techniques. That is the process of reproducing graphics through electrical or mechanical means.

Once the high-resolution image of the painting was transferred, skilled artisans then applied gold leaf by hand to the painting on the inside of the lid, as well as to the music desk and legs. This deliberate touch perfectly reflects the golden expression of Art Nouveau, and Klimt himself.
