Coach House Pianos supports Swansea's art students Street piano project

By Guest Blog - November 07, 2022

Coach House Pianos is delighted to support a Street piano project in Swansea in support of Documenting Jazz Conference. The company has donated four pianos that have been customised by students from The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and will be displayed across Swansea to make music accessible to all.

The fourth annual Documenting Jazz Conference will take place this week in Swansea, from 9th to 12th November 2022 at the Dylan Thomas Centre – in partnership with Jazz Heritage Wales.

Nick Rusling, Founder of Coach House Pianos said: “it is part of the DNA of our business to encourage as many people as possible in music making. We are also very involved in the education sector, supplying pianos to many schools and teaching institutions. We are delighted to take part in this project, revealing the close bonds between visual art and music and encouraging young students to express their creativity. We believe that music should be accessible to all and are grateful to be part of this project.”

Dr Dave Bird, Lecturer in Creative Music Technology at The University of Wales Trinity Saint David adds: “The pianos used in the project were kindly donated by Coach House Pianos. Before the design process started, soon after the pianos were delivered to the Swansea College of Art campus, staff and students started to play the instruments and music could be heard throughout our buildings. Not everyone has access to musical instruments, especially an expensive instrument such as a piano, and we strongly believe that music should be accessible to all. I hope this project provides a unique opportunity to play, explore and improvise in some way.”

The five sites where you can discover the street pianos and their unique designs are: Elysium, HQ Urban Kitchen, Dynevor Centre for Art and Design, Swansea Indoor Market, and the Dylan Thomas Centre.

Students taking part in the projects study in different areas including, Art and Design Foundation, Surface Pattern and Textiles, Illustration and Fine Art.

Documenting Jazz 2022 runs across four days, with keynote speeches delivered by Dr Joan Cartwright and Francesco Martinelli. Further information can be found at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/documenting-jazz-conference-swansea-2022-tickets-440938538037
